The River Po at Suzzara

I returned to The River Po near Suzzara, Mantova,  this time I walked to an area where the River Po divides into many islands.  I then followed the zigzagging “argine” back the port. From this elevated position one can appreciate the vastness of the floodplain –“Golena”.

Afterwards I drove along the embankment above the Po towards Borgoforte, Mantova. I was confronted by this fantastic afterglow reflected in the river.

Autumn at Passo del Cerreto

Autumn has arrived late this year. On Sunday I went up to the lakes around the Passo del Cerreto. The colours were quite spectacular.

Lake Pranda is below the ski station of Cerreto Laghi  and Lago Pranda is just  over on the Tuscan side of the pass. Both are easy to reach by car.

Valle Dell Inferno - Hell Valley

The Valle dell Inferno ( Hell Valley) on the border between the province of Reggio Emilia and Tuscany is a good name for this walk. From Cerreto Pass one climbs 600meters up to Monte la Nuda, with the last 200M at 45°. It takes (or should take) about one and three quarters of an hour from the car park.

It was a fantastic day, but when I got to the top the wind was incredibly strong . It was worthwhile just for the view towards La Spezia  and the sea beyond.

The Po Valley

The Po Valley has a very special atmosphere, especially in autumn when the ever present mist and slow moving water gives a sensation of timeless calm.

I worked for some years near the Po and so I know the stretch that runs through Reggio Emilia quite well. It’s also one of my favourite areas to photograph.
Luzzara, Reggio Emilia is much the same as it was when I first went there 20 years ago.

The Po at Suzzara in the province of Mantova was a new discovery which I hope to explore again.

After the sun goes down it is best not to hang around as one risks being eaten alive by the particularly aggressive mosquitoes that are to be found here.  Mosquito screens at the windows  are standard issue for all houses in the “Bassa”.
