No snow in the Apennines

This year the Apennines have received very little snow. It was not until after Christmas that we had any at all.

Anyway I managed to get up into the mountains two or three times to catch what little snow we have had.
The first set of pictures were taken at Lago Pranda near the Cerreto pass.  I just managed to get to the lake before the sun disappeared behind the mountains. Still I managed to take some interesting pictures of the lake which is usually just an uninteresting expanse of white in winter.

The second set of pictures were taken at the “Recinti” a curious place with its small fields divided up with wire and crazy fence posts near Valbona a small village below Monte Ventasso.

When I arrived it had clouded over but I was rewarded with a spectacular sunset that did not need any post processing to emphasise the colours.

Last Sunday in Reggio Emilia it was a cloudless day when I left. When I got to Castel Nuovo Monti I could see that bad weather was trying to creep into Emilia from Tuscany and Liguria. Some of the mountains in the Province of Parma were already covered.

I decided to go to Monte Cavalbianco above the Pradarena Pass. When I got to the pass it was covered in cloud but climbing up the footpath that leads to the mountain I quickly emerged from the clouds.

Climbing up as far as it was safe to do I was rewarded with a spectacular view of the bad weather to the south trying to break through the mountains into Emilia.
