Castell'Arquato, a fortified Medieval village, is a popular Sunday afternoon destination, near Piacenza. It was quite busy when I visited. I wanted to visit the Collegiata di Castell' Arquato, for my Romanesque project. The Collegiata, is in the middle of the town, that sits on a hilltop.
The church was built between 1117 and 1122. As well as the bare stonework of the nave, the Cappella di S. Caterina d’Alessandria, dating from the fifteenth century adds a dash of colour.
The most interesting aspect of this church is the decoration of the columns. We can see a good selection of the Medieval Bestiary. In the Baptistry, we can see a font big enough for the full immersion, that was practiced when the church was founded.
A winter visit with less crowds is planned to see the other Medieval monuments in this pretty village.
