Sometimes I do not
have to travel far to see interesting places. Every year an organisation called the FAI
(Fondo Ambientale Italiano) arrange for public access to places normally closed
to the public.

Here this year it was possible to climb the
bell tower of the “Basilica della Beata Vergine della Ghiara” Reggio’s most
interesting monument.

This church was built following the miracle
of a deaf and dumb boy who regained these faculties whilst praying on the site
of the Basilica in 1596.

The construction of the church began straight
away and some of the best artists of the seventeenth century where engaged to
decorate the church.
To climb the bell tower means having faith in
the original rickety staircase that takes you up to the top. The view over the
town on reaching the top was well worth the climb.

Also interesting is the fact to see the
structure of the vaults with the timer roof above.
